How to Publish your FrontPage 2003 site using FTP (File Transfer Protocol).
General Questions:
Q: Can I continue to use FrontPage 2003 to maintain my web site?
A: Yes! FrontPage 2003 is still a very good program for maintaining your web site, just be sure to turn off the FrontPage Server Extensions option since that is no longer supported on all new hosting accounts created after January 15 2008.
This is done by selecting Page Options … from the Tools menu and selecting the Authoring Tab in the Page Options dialog box. Under the "FrontPage and SharePoint technologies" select "None" to turn any old extensions options off.
Publishing with FTP:
If you have always worked directly on the live web server and did not publish from a local copy of your web site you will have to create a local copy of your web site the 1st time before you try to publish your site using FTP.
FrontPage walks you through the steps and now you also have a local "backup" copy of your site!

You will be prompted for your FTP account information. This information was sent to you in your hosting account "welcome" e-mail. Create a support request if you need a copy of your account information.
Publish files and folders to an FTP server (Overview)
To publish files and folders in a Web site to a Web server that supports File Transfer Protocol (FTP) (FTP: A communication protocol that makes it possible for a user to transfer files between remote locations on a network. This protocol also allows users to use FTP commands, such as listing files and folders, to work with files on a remote location.), you must open and save a copy of the site to your computer, edit the files and folders in that copy, and then publish the updated files and folders to the server.
Do the following:
Set the remote Web site properties
- On the View menu, click Remote Web Site.
- At the top of the document window, click Remote Web Site Properties.
- On the Remote Web Site tab, under Remote Web server type, click FTP.
- In the Remote Web site location box, type the address, including the FTP protocol, of the remote Web site that you want to publish folders and files to — for example, ftp://nt11.srnetcreators.com— or click Browse to locate the site, and then click Open.
- If you want to view a specific folder when you connect to the site, in the FTP directory box, type the path to the folder — for example, www/images.
- Each time you publish files and folders to the site, select the Use Passive FTP check box.
- Do any of the following:
- To remove specific types of code from Web pages as they are being published, on the Optimize HTML tab, select the options you want.
- To change the default options for publishing, on the Publishing tab, select the options you want.
- Click OK.
